Double Self-Portrait
With the birth of my first son I felt the urge to transcend the status quo in my works.
I stopped on this image for its reminiscence of the Madonna and Child iconography, perpetuated actually by male perspectives.
Observing the photograph, I found it funny that again a male was the author of it. It ended up in a double self-portrait painting, with a tarot-like mirrored image: one side as a newborn at my mother's breast in 1986 and the other side in adulthood, as a mother myself in 2019.

This painting was inspired by Paula Modersohn-Becker's self-portraits. She is believed to have made the first self-portrait as a pregnant woman.
Female nudes were generally depicted by men in art. With Paula, the woman is now subject, object and creator.
Pregnancy revealed to me the power of creation, not only biologically, but artistically.

When a person dies, most of it's belongings - usually clothes, are being given away, probably in the idea of moving on easier.
This is one of the self-tailored dresses kept from my deceased mother.
